Clutch Certified, explained

What that means, what we check, and what comes after.

Buying a used car shouldn't ask you to become a mechanic. We don't think it should ask you to read the fine print on someone else's "certification" program either.

That's why every used car you'll find on clutch.ca is Clutch Certified. It's the standard every car has to clear before it shows up on our site. We've always run things this way. We're just stating it more clearly now. Below is what that means, what we check, and what comes after you take a car home.

What you can take from this

  • Every car we sell on Clutch is Clutch Certified. No exceptions.
  • Only 40% of the cars we buy from the public pass our inspection process. The standard is selective by design.
  • The inspection runs across five stations: Submission, Full Inspection, Safety, QC, and Pre-delivery.
  • You have 10 days to love it or return it. No questions asked.
  • Every car comes with a 90-day warranty on core mechanical systems.

What is Clutch Certified?

Only the best cars become Clutch Certified. Every car we sell has to meet our standard before it earns the Clutch Certified badge. It's a bar that only the best used cars clear. Clutch Certified cars are inspected, road-tested, reconditioned, and signed off by real Clutch mechanics before you ever see them on the site.

What does it actually mean?

Clutch Certified means your car has been inspected, reconditioned, detailed, and certified in person by a Clutch mechanic. Every car. No exceptions. The 210-point inspection is the beginning, not the whole story. From there, anything that needs reconditioning or replacing gets done. Only after the car meets our standard is it Clutch Certified, then detailed and photographed inside and out. The full process:

  • 210-point inspection by real Clutch mechanics
  • Mechanic-led road tests by independent Clutch mechanics
  • Reconditioning, replacement, and repair to meet the standard
  • Then, and only then, it earns the Clutch Certified badge
  • Photographed and detailed inside and out, so what you see online is what you get

For a deeper category-by-category breakdown of the inspection itself, see Inside the 210-point inspection.

Is every car on Clutch Certified?

Every car you see on Clutch is Certified. If it's on the site, it's Clutch Certified. If it didn't pass our inspection, it isn't here. That's the whole point of the standard. It's not optional, and it's selective by design.

Who certifies the cars?

Our own real Clutch mechanics, working on-site, every time. Clutch mechanics, employed by Clutch, working in our own facility. They handle the road tests, the inspection, the reconditioning, and the sign-off. No third-party check, no franchise dealer protocol, no rotating contractor. Same team, same process, every car.

What does the inspection actually cover?

210 points. Five inspection stations. Nothing skipped. The 210-point inspection covers mechanical, safety, and cosmetic condition across every major system: engine, brakes, suspension, electrical, tires, bodywork. It runs across five stations:

  • Submission, the initial assessment
  • Full inspection, all 210 points
  • Safety, a dedicated safety check
  • QC, quality control review
  • Pre-delivery, the final sign-off before the car reaches you

For the full category-by-category breakdown of what we check, see Inside the 210-point inspection.

What happens after a car passes inspection?

Passing inspection is just the beginning. Once a car clears the 210-point inspection, it goes through reconditioning. Reconditioning is where every Clutch Certified car is brought up to the standard, with multiple Clutch mechanics working on each car at this stage. After that, it's detailed and photographed meticulously, every angle and every detail, so what you see online is exactly what you get. Only after inspection, reconditioning, and detailing does the car earn the Clutch Certified badge.

What about the cars that don't pass?

If it's not the best, it doesn't get listed. Only 40% of the cars we buy from the public pass our inspection process. The 60% that don't are sent to dealer-only auctions, where other dealerships buy them and resell them on their own lots. They never get listed on Clutch. The standard isn't negotiable, and it doesn't bend with inventory pressure. For a closer look at what gets caught and why, see What happens to cars that don't pass our inspection.

How does Clutch Certified compare to CPO?

Our standards exceed most CPO programs, and we can prove it. CPO programs vary by dealer. Some are rigorous, most aren't. Clutch Certified is our own standard, documented and visible on every listing. A few specifics:

  • Brake pads: 3.2mm minimum (double Ontario's legal requirement of 1.6mm)
  • Tire tread: 4mm minimum (above most CPO programs, and double the legal minimum)
  • Every car: road-tested by independent Clutch mechanics, not just a visual once-over
  • Free CARFAX vehicle history report on every listing

We didn't set those numbers because anyone asked us to. We set them because they're the right standard. For the full side-by-side, see Clutch Certified vs CPO: what's the difference?.

How is it different from buying new?

You get the highest quality on the used market without paying a new car price. A new car gets you the newest features and that new-car smell. It also gets you a steep depreciation hit in the first two years. Clutch Certified is for buyers who want the highest standard of pre-owned quality without paying the new-car premium. The cars are inspected harder than most CPO programs and backed by the same post-purchase protections.

How is it different from buying from a private seller?

A private seller tells you what they know. We tell you what we found. Private sellers disclose what they're aware of, which is sometimes a lot and sometimes very little. Clutch mechanics find what you wouldn't know to look for: hidden rust, frame issues, brake wear past the standard, tire depth below the bar. A full 210-point inspection across five stations. Plus a full accident history and CARFAX report on every listing.

Why is "only the best" actually good for me?

We only sell the best of the best, and that starts with finding the best used cars on the market. Only 40% of the cars we buy from the public pass our inspection process. The fact that most don't is exactly why we stand by what we do sell. You're not picking from everything we could move. You're picking from what cleared a deliberately high bar.

What does "10 days to love it or return it" actually mean?

Love it in 10 days, or return it. That's Clutch Certified. A car is a big purchase, and a 15-minute test drive can't tell you if it's the right one for your life. With Clutch, you have 10 days to drive the car the way you actually drive: commutes, errands, a road trip with the family. If it isn't right, for any reason, we take it back. No awkward conversations. No fine print. The 10-day window isn't a safety net for us. It's peace of mind for you.

What if I wake up on day 3 and it just doesn't feel right?

If you don't love it, we'll take it back. 10-day money back. No questions. That's the deal. You don't need a mechanical reason. You don't need to find a defect. If you wake up on day 3 and it isn't the right car for you, bring it back. We built the standard so you never have to worry about the car itself. If the feeling isn't there, that's enough.

What does the 90-day warranty cover?

Every Clutch Certified car comes with a 90-day warranty on core mechanical systems. If something covered breaks inside the window, Clutch covers the repair, parts and labour. No co-pay, no per-incident fee. Core mechanical means engine, transmission, drivetrain, electrical, cooling, fuel system, and the major sensors that keep them running. Wear-and-tear items like brake pads, tires, and wipers aren't covered, since those are expected to need replacement at predictable intervals.

Sounds great, but do you have the numbers to back it up?

Yes, yes we do. Subjecting more than 100,000 vehicles to the Clutch Certified standard since 2017 has produced a lot of rich data. We've packaged it into the 2026 Clutch Certified Reliability Report. It ranks 25 brands openly across four reliability dimensions. A few places to start:

Anything else?

If you have a question we didn't answer here, our team is one click away. The standard doesn't change. The protection doesn't change. The only thing that changes is the car you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Clutch Certified?

Clutch Certified is the standard every used vehicle on clutch.ca has to meet before being sold. It includes a 210-point inspection, full reconditioning, a 10-day return policy, and a 90-day or 6,000-km warranty. Every Clutch vehicle goes through all four pillars. None are optional or trim-dependent.

Is Clutch Certified worth it?

For most Canadian used-car buyers, yes. Every Clutch Certified vehicle has cleared a 210-point inspection, been reconditioned, and is backed by a 10-day return window and 90-day warranty. Compared to a private sale or non-CPO dealer purchase, the included protections cover problems that would otherwise come out of the buyer's pocket.

Is Clutch Certified the same as certified pre-owned?

No. Manufacturer Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs are run by individual brands through their dealer networks, usually limited to vehicles under six years old. Clutch Certified is independent of any manufacturer, applies to every vehicle Clutch sells, and includes a 10-day return window that CPO programs almost never offer.

Clutch Certified vs dealer CPO Manufacturer CPO is brand-specific and usually capped at six years and 120,000 km. Clutch Certified is brand-agnostic, applies to every car we sell, and includes a 10-day no-questions return policy that CPO programs rarely match. CPO offers a longer manufacturer warranty; Clutch Certified offers a 90-day Clutch warranty plus the return window.

Clutch Certified vs private sale Private sales are typically as-is with no inspection guarantee, no warranty, and no return policy. Clutch Certified includes all three. Private sales tend to have lower sticker prices because there's no overhead and no included protection. Clutch Certified prices include the protections and reconditioning investment.

Clutch Certified vs AutoTrader AutoTrader is a marketplace that lists vehicles from dealers and private sellers across Canada. Quality, inspection rigour, and protection vary widely by listing. Clutch is a single retailer that applies one consistent standard (Clutch Certified) to every vehicle on clutch.ca, so the inspection and warranty terms are the same on every car.

Can I return a Clutch Certified car?

Yes. Every Clutch customer has 10 days from delivery to return their car for any reason. No questions, no fees. The window starts the day the car arrives. The only exception is customer-caused damage; outside of that, the policy is no-questions.

Does Clutch Certified include warranty?

Yes. Every Clutch Certified vehicle is backed by a 90-day or 6,000-km warranty on core mechanical systems, whichever comes first. The warranty covers engine, transmission, drivetrain, electrical, cooling, fuel system, and major sensors. There's no co-pay or per-incident fee.

Who inspects Clutch Certified cars?

Clutch's own mechanics, working at our reconditioning facilities. Every car evaluated for retail sale runs through the same 210-point inspection by trained Clutch technicians, including a 79-point road test that puts the vehicle through real-world driving conditions before it gets listed.

What does a 210-point inspection include?

The 210 checks cover eight major areas: a 79-point road test, engine (41), body (21), tires & brakes (21), suspension (16), underbody (11), lights (10), and steering (8). Each area uses a standardized checklist that applies to every vehicle, regardless of brand, age, or mileage.

What happens if a car fails inspection?

It depends on what failed. Cosmetic and minor mechanical items are repaired in reconditioning before the car is listed. Significant rust, drivetrain failures, or major damage send the car to wholesale instead, where it's sold to other dealers. Roughly half of the cars we buy don't make it through.

Are Clutch cars inspected by mechanics?

Yes. Every Clutch vehicle considered for retail sale is inspected by Clutch's own trained mechanics, not third-party services or quick visual checks. The inspection takes place at our reconditioning facilities and includes the 79-point road test in real-world driving conditions.

Is buying a car online safe in Canada?

Buying online from Clutch is as safe as buying from any reputable dealer, often safer. Clutch publishes its inspection results and warranty terms publicly, includes a 10-day return window, and delivers the car directly to your address. You're not committing to a vehicle you can't inspect, road-test, or return.

How do I avoid hidden issues when buying a used car?

Three things help: get a full pre-purchase inspection, pull a Carfax history report, and only buy from a seller who offers a return window. Clutch builds all three into the purchase: every car has a 210-point inspection report, comes with full Carfax history, and includes a 10-day no-questions return.
